THE STORY

Highest Recommendation

This was a series that had everything a Science-fiction fan could want. It had an enigmatic & tormented main character Duncan McCloud, played superbly by English actor Adrian Paul. Each episode had plenty of angst, action, suspense, fine locations, & a fair amount of romance.

This season saw the ever noble immortal Duncan McCloud having to deal with Tessa’s death, Richie’s new found immortality, facing the mutually repressed feelings he & fellow immortal Amanda have for one another, & the first multi-episode story involving Methos, the oldest known living immortal. These episodes showed an intruiging look into male bonding & the angst that friedship can bring to all concerned. From episode one “The Samurai” to episode nine “Shadows” to the “Finale” episodes numbers twenty one to two. They all spotlighted & magnified the human condition that was relatable even to we non-immortals. Would any of us really want to live forever?

There have been 4 Jesse Stone novels by Robert Parker. And though Stone is 35 years old in the first one, and in his mid 40s by now, Selleck takes and makes the role his own. He’s perfect in the role, and the whole production of this made for TV movie is top notch. there need to be more smart mystery type shows like this around.

When it aired, there were early reports that Selleck was interested in doing more with the character. Perhaps a series of TV movies, or even a TV series. It aired on CBS, and fans of Spenser For Hire (when is that whole series coming to DVD?)would love to see a regular weekly series. Personally, I don’t know how well it would hold up weekly. There are only 4 books out to base this on, compared to the more than a dozen when Spenser aired. But with the right scripts it could become a great weekly show. And a hit. But CBS would probably aim for 21 episodes a season, which might strain the concept a little.

But either way, this movie was excellent. Fans of Parker,Selleck or just a good mystery should check it out.

Tom Selleck, Mimi Rogers, Viola Davis, and the rest the cast do an excellent job in this made for TV movie based on the Robert Parker book. This story of a New England sheriff, Chief Jesse Stone, trying to catch a cold calculating serial killer is well crafted. As if that wasn’t enough he must catch those responsible for raping a girl. The book is a great read, and the movie does a fine job of following the key premises in the book. The directing by Robert Harmon is superb. I think his previous work as a camera man has given him a wonderful insight in helping the audience see and feel not only the characters clearly, but the surroundings as well.

Along with the great job on the main case/story, the other cases/subplots were masterfully done giving a real feel of being there. This is one of the best TV movies I have seen in years. I applaud CBS for backing it. If you are an avid detective reader you should enjoy the book. Fans of detective movies or Tom Selleck should find this one well to their liking. I am happy to say the DVD is excellent. The picture and sound are incredibly sharp. It includes a background of the movie with interviews of the cast and director. I was very pleased that Tom Selleck indicated that the success of this movie has started plans for a series of movies. I can’t wait to see the next one!

Brought to the screen by some of the people who gave us Schindler’s List, Hook, Jurassic Park, and Rain Man, this moral fable is a well executed film that teaches without preaching.

The Legend of Johnny Lingo moves at a leisurely place as an outcast boy finds his place in the world with a little help from some new friends. It starts out somewhat predictable (but what Disney movie isn’t?), then we learn what the Legend actually is in a surprise half-way through. And the boy-goes-back-for-the-girl ending is very well done with a little twist of its own to keep it interesting.

Not enough movement to keep smaller kids interested and probably too uncool for older kids, it is a perfect fit for families with children in the 6-14 age group.

The scenery is breathtaking. And the soundtrack, which consists of traditional and contemporary Polynesian themes, is fabulous; the music is well selected.

Family movies run the risk of being pretty low quality knowing that there are so few movies out they’ll have some minimum audience no matter what. This is not one of those movies. While shot on an indy budget (I would guess), the production values and editing really bring out the story in an entertaining way. It is charming little movie.

I was raised on the 1969 short film “Johnny Lingo” produced at BYU.

I enjoyed this retelling with one exception. The Tahitian Noni company (one of the sponsors) shamelessly plugged the noni fruit and its juice. I admit that noni, despite their taste, have wonderful healing powers, but this propoganda belongs in a commercial, not a movie.

The most shameless example of self-promotion was when Tama was threatened with death because spilling noni juice displeased the gods. None of the gold or silver with Johnny would appease the gods’ anger over the spilt nectar.

I recognized a lot of the cast from “The Other Side of Heaven”, and their acting did not disappoint. The lush valleys of New Zealand were also impressive.

If you are a “Utah Mormon” you may want to buy the LdS Collection 2-disc edition from Deseret Book. This edition includes the BYU classic, the feature film, and some bonus material. Again, the LdS edition is labeled “NOT FOR SALE OVER THE INTERNET”, so you have to go to Deseret Book.

Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) certainly had the potential to go down in history as one of the greatest presidents the United States ever had. He, more than anyone else, was responsible for the triumph of the civil rights movement, and his war on poverty legislation offered many people a chance where before there was none. Conservatives often deride Johnson’s legislation as the cause of the ballooning government expenditures, but that is a phony argument. The programs started by LBJ have been dramatically expanded since then, often under Republican administrations.

However, LBJ was defeated by two powerful forces that he simply could not control. They were the Vietnam War and black anger that spilled out into the streets. In fairness to the man, no one else could have controlled them. Given the political situation in the United States at that time, no American president could have withdrawn from Vietnam. The spectre of the “Red Menace” was overpowering, and no one could possibly consider withdrawing from IndoChina, which would have led to an almost immediate takeover by the Communist North Vietnamese.

What is so tragic is the amount of self-delusion that existed in the United States government at that time. Johnson and his senior advisors really believed that they could win the war in Vietnam, if only they would not falter and show weakness. They never realized that not only was the war not winnable, it wasn’t even possible to tie. The best quote about that war is near the end of the tape, when a senior official says, “The North Vietnamese knew that we would eventually leave the country. Therefore, all they had to do was hold out and take over when we left.” Johnson realized that the only way to “win” the war was to obliterate North Vietnam, something that could only be done with nuclear weapons. However, this would have led to World War III, as the Chinese and Soviets would not have stood by while this was being done.

John Connally is interviewed on the tape as saying that he advised Johnson to use whatever force necessary to win the war. Connally, as were all the other hawks, was the most delusional of all Americans. The United States dropped more tonnage of bombs on Vietnam, a nation of about 130,000 square miles, than was dropped on Europe throughout the entire Second World War. Since Germany alone was almost that size, and bombs were dropped throughout Europe, it should have been obvious, even to a fool, that more bombs would not defeat the North Vietnamese. There is little value in bombing a bomb crater.

The second force was the pent-up fury that blacks had over the decades of their oppression. Although Johnson was creating legislation that was alleviating the suffering of blacks, it was not fast enough for some and many of the nation’s inner cities exploded in rioting. Johnson was baffled by this, confronting the only black man in his administration, demanding to know why blacks didn’t appreciate what he was doing.

Therefore, what you see on this tape is a man who was a political dynamo, enormously capable of making political deals. He was a master at insider politics, capable of stroking members of congress just the right way, in order to get what he wanted. His great failing was that he never understood that the North Vietnamese leadership were not members of the U. S. Congress, where he could buy their support by building a dam in their district. So, as the tape progresses, you see the most confident, capable man being slowly reduced to someone who was beaten into submission.

As the narrators emphasize, much of the difficulty was due to Johnson’s lack of candor with the American people. He misled the American people so much about the situation in Vietnam that when he told the truth, he was not believed. Tet was a military disaster for the Vietcong forces, they never fully recovered from their losses. However, when Johnson tried to explain it to the public, even longtime supporters of the war began to oppose it.

LBJ was a giant of a man, physically and politically. He put this nation on a course of social change via legislation that we can be proud of. Yet, he is rarely remembered with fondness, it is as if the nation would rather not think of him at all. This tape shows him as he was, talking with pride at the legislation that he put through the Congress, trying to explain his policies in Vietnam, pressuring members of congress by getting right in their faces, showing his surgical scar and sometimes even picking his nose. More history was packed into the sixties than any other decade in the last half of the twentieth century. In many ways, Johnson was the sixties, although the forces of that time destroyed him. From this tape, you can witness his political death from a thousand cuts.

PBS’ “American Experience” has become synonomous with quality television, and its profile of the country’s Vietnam War-embattled president, Lyndon B. Johnson, is one of the reasons why. While Johnson arguably is remembered foremost as the president done in by an unpopular war, he is presented here as a man and politician of much more substance and who apparently did have an honest and compassionate empathy for his constituency, especially the impoverished and disenfranchised. After the obligatory recounting of Johnson’s birth and childhood, the documentary takes us to Johnson’s early career on Capitol Hill and his gradual ascent to power, starting with his selection as presidential candidate John F. Kennedy’s vice presidential running mate. On that count, we get a feeling of a tenuous relationship between the charismatic Bostonian and prairie-tough Texan, a political combination that became even more tenuous by the out-and-out dislike between the eventual vice president and Robert F. Kennedy, brother and attorney general of the president. Of course, the shattering events in Dallas Nov. 22, 1963, vaulted LBJ to the pinnacle of world power, a positioned that was solidifed by a 1964 landslide presidential election victory. From there, LBJ sets off to expand his predecessor’s social agenda, from voting rights for the country’s disenfranchised minorities to the “war on poverty.” But, not surprisingly, the unpopular war in Southeast Asia becomes LBJ’s highest priority. In the end, of course, the fire of public opposition to both the war and Johnson’s handling of it forced the president who just four years earlier was validated by the American people in a landslide victory not to even seek renomination. Though LBJ is perhaps unfairly linked to a presidential administration that was dismantled by civil protest, we are reminded in this profile that he also worked toward a better society for America’s poor and disenfranchised. In the end, we actually develop a sense that Johnson was moved more by public service than personal gains of power and can only hope that history treats him kinder than his contemporaries.

I already own both films but purchased this as the case described “Dirty Dozen” as being a 16×9 transfer. It is not. Further, special features are listed for this film that are not actually on the disc. I knew I was in trouble when the film began with the Turner logo. Old transfer. “Kelly’s Heroes” IS 16×9 as it was on the single feature release.

In addition, it appears the newly repackaged “How the West Was Won” suffers from the same deceptive packaging by being labeled “enhanced for widescreen TVs” when it is not and is also an old Turner master.

People are bound to complain so it’s hard to believe Warner Home Video, previously very reliable, would do this intentionally. Something is defintely wrong in their QC department these days.

These are both EXCELLENT movies. However, for some reason (mere incompetence, I’d bet) the dvd’s packaging states that The Dirty Dozen is presented in 16×9 (anamorphic) format and also includes audio commentary by cast and crew. This is NOT TRUE–neither of these features exist on the disc. If you’re thinking of buying this as an upgrade from your standard single-disc version of Dirty Dozen, don’t bother. The DD side of this flipper disc is the same as the budget single-disc, non-anamorphic version that’s been available for years.

Nothing really technical to say about these movies. If you love old films with their simple plot, and the sensational singing voice of Mario Lanza, then don’t think twice about getting these rare collectibles. The film is exceptionally restored with vivid colors and crisp sound. If you like it, buy it!

These movies were so great. I remember seeing “Toast of New Orleans” when I was a very small girl. I fell in love with that handsome face and smile of Mario Lanza and I tried to sing like Kathryn Grayson for years. I hope to get all the Lanza movies. I will enjoy these for years to come.

The DVD is as much of a treat as the film itself. The film won an Academy Award for Best Cinematoghraphy in 1994 and it really shows on this edition. Colors are perfect,picture immaculate, and the sound(in 5.1 Dolby Digital)completes the total home theatre package.

It is in widescreen. There’s a ton of special features, including the making of featurette, some great commentary by Zwick and Pitt, and more. The movie can be played in several languages or with subtitles.

If you’ve never seen it,this film has something for everyone, war, romance,western adventure,action,drama It will sweep you off your feet, and you will want to watch it again. If youve already seen it you will not be dissapointed with the transfer to this DVD

Family saga is usually the domain of female audiences but while there is no denying that “Legends of the Fall” is a family saga, it has the power to keep any demographic, over the age of ten, spellbound. Love and jealousy are still the central themes and yet the characters are so large that I doubt many people would not envy them, in some way at least.

The Ludlows are almost mythical Americans. They live a tough but free existence in the North Country. Ruled by Colonel William Ludlow, (Anthony Hopkins), a Father carved from granite, the family’s three sons grow up to be almost as tough. And for a man who spent his last professional years fighting for the rights of the native American’s, a son who has absorbed native culture, along with the best of western values, has to hold a special place in his heart.

Tristan Ludlow, (Brad Pitt), is the focus of our attention from the start. His wild and fearless spirit is guided by One Stab, the colonel’s loyal Indian companion. It is One Stab that narrates Tristan’s story and from him we learn that Tristan’s destiny is entwined with his animal spirit, the Grizzly Bear. As a boy he dares an enormous sleeping grizzly and they take some of each other’s blood. Interpreting his later choices through the moods of the bear is a fascinating idea.

The pace of events pick up the moment the youngest son, Samuel, brings home his bride to be. The beautiful Susannah, (Julia Ormond), manages to steal the hearts of all three brothers and the father as well, although he has the wisdom to act correctly. Samuel arrives with more concern for the growing war in Europe than for his new love. His desire to play his part in the fight is opposed by the Colonel, jaded by the Government’s past immoral acts. But nothing can stop a young man with a cause. Despite his brother’s protection he manages to fulfill his destiny, opening the door to further possibilities for his brothers, with Susannah.

She manages to set the brothers against each other and forces the eldest, Alfred, (Aidan Quinn), on a new path entirely; one that takes him to the U.S. congress, supported by less than honorable men. All of this makes for a heady brew, plenty of drama, powerful performances and broken hearts. For my money, the film wouldn’t have been the same without Isabel Two, played by both Karina Lombard and Sekwan Auger. She waits patiently for her chance with Tristan to come. She and One Stab, form the calm center to the hurricane that is the Ludlow family. And like a hurricane, one you’ve been touched, you’ll never forget “Legends of the Fall”.

Being a fan of both Stephen King and George Romero, “Creepshow” has always been among my favorite horror flicks. Campy at times perhaps, but that’s the whole point - to bring a comic book feel to film. And it offers a perfect balance of silly comic horror and genuine horror, making for a very enjoyable viewing experience if one remembers not to take it too seriously.

What you get is 5 mini stories, some of them better than others but all offering plenty of shocks and chills. It opens with “Father’s Day,” where a deceased victim of murder rises from the grave for a nice little Father’s Day surprise. One of the better ones. “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” follows, where Stephen King takes on the lead role as a hillbilly who finds a meteor with a nasty habit of making green hair grow on, well, everything. This one is more funny than scary but still good. King does a great job as the clumsy and unintelligent-but-likeable Jordy Verrill. Next up is “Something to Tide You Over,” where a vengeful man (Leslie Nielsen) gets even on his cheating wife and her lover (Ted Danson) by burying them both in the sand and letting the tide take care of the rest. This is my second favorite of the bunch. It’s cool to see Nielsen take on the role of the “bad guy” for a change. Goes to show his versatility as an actor. Ted Danson is great too. What follows is “The Crate,” in my opinion the best one. It’s also the longest one. Hal Holbrook plays a loser whose nasty wife gets what she deserves when he finds a mysterious blood-thirsty creature locked away in an old crate. This is the darkest and creepiest of the stories. Pure fun, with top-notch acting from everyone. The final story, “They’re Creeping Up On You,” is the only one I’ve never liked. An eccentric millionare with a roach phobia just can’t seem to get rid of his little crawling friends no matter what he does. Anyone who doesn’t like roaches is advised to skip this one. The final scene will take away your appetite for at least a few days.

Now that I’ve talked about the movie itself (easily 5 stars), I have to comment on this sorry excuse for a DVD (0 stars). This has to be THE worst transfer ever put on DVD. I used to think it couldn’t get any worse than the first edition single-disc transfer of “Scarface,” but I was wrong. “Creepshow” was put on DVD just for the sake of putting it on DVD. NO CARE whatsoever was put into presentation. As another reviewer has mentioned, the movie literally “jumps” throughout the entire time. Grain and those annoying “hairs” appear on the screen almost every second. The VHS offers better picture quality; that says a lot. The only bonus feature of this DVD is the trailer, which I suppose is cool, but let’s get real. Another slap in the face is the scene selections. The inside of the DVD case advertises 41 scene selections in the “Scene Index” card, but that’s misleading, as the movie only has 21 actual scene selections. So if you want to watch one specific scene, 9 times out of 10 you will need to select the *closest* scene to the one you want and end up scanning forwards or backwards to get to the one you really want. Yet another example of a poorly thought-out DVD.

Bottom line: “Creepshow” is a great cult flick that deserves a MUCH better DVD. If you have the VHS stick with that. Only get this DVD if you no longer own a VCR or absolutely must own all of your movies on the DVD format. “Creepshow 2″ recently got a new DVD edition that does it justice, so maybe there’s some hope that “Creepshow” will eventually get the same treatment someday. Until then, we must settle for this lackluster DVD.

How can i ever express my glee toward this 1982 film? From the first viewing i fell in love with the timeless horror classic. This particular entry into the genre is notable for its uncannyand faithful tribute to the 1950’s horror comics (as distributed by EC Publishing), its comical charm, its fantastic effects, and its cult creators (Stephen King and George Romero, and effects by fan fave Tom Savini). Packed with five stories of the macabre this film is bound to please fans of horror as well as kids, adults, and most other moviegoers with its immortal style. The first tale provides us with a story regarding a cranky old man that was murdered by his daughter on Father’s Day because she grew weary of his actions against her. Knowing that you are watching a Romero/King flick only can assure you of the fun to come from said situation. The second tale of terror stars none other than Stephen King in what is perhaps horror film’s most enjoyable guest star role. King plays a simple hick who comes across a meteor which spreads its reign of terror around his home. King provides us with a truly memorable and quirky performance that is sure to remain in most people’s minds. The third tale involves a cheating wife and the vengeance of her spiteful husband on both she and her “other” man…naturally taking up on the EC tradition we can only expect the worse lesson for the wrath-ridden husband via supernatural means. The fourth tale is about a strange crate that is discovered beneath the steps of a college stairwell. Within lie the mysterious contents of an Artic expedtion…that we all know will only wreak their havoc. The final creepout is slowly presented to us in the form of an evil tycoon with nothing on his mind but money…and getting rid of filthy cockaroaches (or vice versa?). Each story is fantastically told and to top it all off we are provided with a wraparound tale that introduces the whole chi-bang. This is what fun is all about. No need to take this serious just watch it for the enjoyability factor and you won’t be disappointed. Fans will also find, much to their pleasure, a wide array of bedazzling special effects, oddball lighting, unique characters, and overall good direction and storytelling. A definite addition to any sane person’s video library. The dvd version is creepshow at its best. Presented in the best color, picture, and sound ever, don’t fret video buyers because the dvd sports nothing extra that you might be missing. Regardless of the lack of extra features this dvd is a no miss. Buy it

The happy ending is clumsily tacked on and reeks “Hollywood” in the worst sense of the word. Otherwise this is another very good Michael Curtiz film with solid acting and great black and white cinematography. Kirk Douglas may surprise you as the obsessed jazzman, Rick Martin. Doris Day and Lauren Bacall are wonderful as the female leads (with Day being so definitively Day, and Bacall so quintessentially Bacall). Hoagy Carmichael is a remarkable screen presence as well. And the music is wonderful. So what’s not to like?…well, the cornball ending and the (at times) stilted dialogue. Still well worth watching. And for jazz movie fans, fans of any or all of the stars or admirers of director Curtiz it remains a must have.

This movie is great! For anyone who loves jazz, or enjoys a good film, I would recommend purchasing this movie. The soundtrack to this movie is just phenomenal.(Played by trumpet ace Harry James) This movie will keep your foot tapping while the splendor of Kirk Douglas captures your attention. This movie is said to be based on the life of jazz cornetist Bix Biederbecke. You will find it to be a great performance that you can not turn away from while you are shown the life of a boy who grows up and makes it big as a remarkable trumpeter.
